SHADOW / silver gelatin prints, 2008-2009
The ultimate platform for driving our lust for illusions forward into its full manifestation: a surface filled with shadows is a place where a truth becomes entirely futile, as the image begs of us to play with its possibilities. Standing in the transcendent reign of the shadow, mysterious and unknown to us, questions arise in search of answers.
The shadow strokes our reality in every corner, in every curve, on any surface, bound to the laws of physics and always at our service.. delineating, defining depth. What we see there does not really exist, but all the while our eyes do not fool us, we certainly do see it — at a borderline between clarity and obscurity.
It is in constant natural movement and forever in a play of elusion and appearance; without the appropriate arms, it is beyond our ability to hold on to.
Yet – confined by photography and depicted on the purity of the white wall, alone and without object, this surface is transformed from a reality of material into a new world of essence, in which the shadow’s lack of being – becomes a being.
A beautiful illustration of the flesh of the shadow is then made through the photograph: the shadow can paint the white wall dark, even black, to the point where the white wall dematerializes, animating the plane that is the shadow. Liberated, the shadow enjoys its own rule, and the roles are reversed: light now serves as a hole in the texture of shadow.
