EN – A Note on Reduction and Alternation

A NOTE ON REDUCTION AND ALTERNATION  /  silver gelatin prints, 2009

How does the single note transform into music?
The intuitive language of visual forms and their compositions into gestalts aided me in my artistic exploration of this question.
In both, tensions are created within a composition of a few elements – whether visual or acoustic. Seeing the single audible elements simultaneously present in the image discloses both their individuality and their mutual organization. A dialogue ensues between sound and image, between their respective spheres of time and space.
The images were created in the darkroom by combining multiple negatives, each containing one single line. This project includes a cello recording of musical phrases corresponding to each image.
